Week 3 Lab 3

I made my neographic map to show the locations of Marine Corps Bases in the United States. This map outlines the largest and most common Bases in the Marine Corps to include the Air Stations. The reason I chose this as my subject is because while I have been in the Marine Corps, I have been all over the country. This map gives me a better idea of where else I may get sent. Marines are required to move from their station every three years. This prevents complacency, and adds variety to a Marine's career. Lastly, moving Marines to different locations distributes individual talents around the Marine Corps. I added videos of what the base is best known for or pictures of the entrance gate. The videos are from youtube. The location of the bases came from wikipedia and from my own experience. This map can also be very useful to people that are interested in joining the Marines Corps, letting them know where they may end up working for the duration of their four year tour.

There are benefits, pitfalls, and consequences of creating neographic maps. The benefit of this map is that it will give the user an idea of where he may be stationed after the completion of bootcamp and what he may be doing as a job at that location. As can be clearly seen by the map this is either East or West Coast. The Marines are amphibious in nature and require access to vast bodies of water to train for the main mission.

The pitfall of this map is that it carries all of my biases. This bias represents only the information that i decided to show/not show. For example, on my map I decided to omit satellite, reserve and overseas bases. These are places that Marines will also end up working, but since the number of marines that will work there is so small, I chose not to show them. Because I chose to exclude this information, people may think that the Marines are non-deployable, which is completely untrue.

Some people, by looking at the videos that I posted, may get motivated to join the Marine Corps and after being deployed to Afghanistan several times working as an infantryman may regret his decision and blame it on me. Furthermore, I posted only the fun stuff that happens in the Marine Corps. Being in the Marine Corps has taught me that it is not for people that cannot follow orders, which is something that I did not post on my map. Lastly, my map is dependent on the information provided by wikipedia and my own knowledge, which may be incorrect. The validity of this map dependent on its source; in this case, wikipedia and my knowledge.
